Non-traditional Gender Teenager Estimates

Significant numbers of Minnesota youth identify as transgender or gender non-conforming

Nontraditional gender labels are becoming more common among American teenagers. According to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics, 2.7% of Minnesota teens prefer terms such as gender-fluid, gender queer, or transgender, rather than more traditional identities such as boy or girl. The numbers surprised researchers, who caution that more studies will be necessary to establish a clear picture of the prevalence of non-traditional gender identities among both adolescents and adults. Research on adults has typically focused solely on transgender identities, with studies suggesting that approximately .6% of the U.S. adult population identifies as transgender. Prior estimates of transgender youth identities (.7 %) were based on studies of adults.
